An umbrella company in Ireland acts as the legal employer for contractors and temporary workers, handling payroll, tax deductions, and compliance with Irish employment law on their behalf.

If you are contracting in Ireland and don’t want to run your own company, an umbrella company Ireland arrangement is a shortcut. The provider becomes your legal employer, invoices your agency or client, and pays you a net salary with tax already deducted. You keep the contract work; it handles the payroll, filings, and paperwork.

I reviewed 11 providers for this update, and I went to each one’s own site rather than trusting a directory. Umbrella companies Ireland offers range from twenty-year-old contractor accountancy houses to lean payroll bureaus and one recruiter-backed option. What separates them is fees, specialization and how much advice arrives with the payroll.

One point on scope. Everything reviewed here is an Irish umbrella company or a firm operating one in the Republic, handling PAYE, PRSI and USC through Revenue’s employer system. Global employment platforms are a different product and are not covered here. If you are contracting on the other side of the Irish Sea, our guide to UK umbrella companies covers that market separately.

How Do Umbrella Companies Work in Ireland?

The mechanics are simpler than the name suggests. You sign an employment contract with the provider, so a contractor umbrella company Ireland setup makes you its employee rather than a self-employed sole trader. You then work your assignment as normal and submit a timesheet at the end of each pay period.

From there, the provider invoices your agency or end client, collects the money, and runs it through payroll. Income tax, PRSI and USC come off before you are paid, and every payment is reported to Revenue in real time under PAYE Modernization. What lands in your account is net pay with a payslip behind it.

The part contractors underrate is the PRSI class. As an employee, you pay Class A, which covers several benefits that self-employed Class S does not. Before signing with any Ireland umbrella company, I check three things. Current Revenue tax clearance, professional body membership, and whether the insurance cover is really included or billed on top.

INSIGHT: How does an umbrella company actually work in Ireland?

The provider becomes your legal employer. It invoices your agency or client, deducts your taxes through PAYE, and pays you a net salary with a payslip.

  • The flow is fixed: you submit a timesheet, the provider invoices the agency or client, income tax, PRSI and USC are deducted, and you are paid net, with real-time reporting to Revenue.
  • Employee PRSI runs at 4.20 percent of earnings to 30 September 2026 and 4.35 percent after that, with the employer paying 11.25 percent above 552 euro a week, rising to 11.40 percent on 1 October 2026.
  • Class A covers Illness Benefit, Occupational Injuries Benefit, Health and Safety Benefit and Jobseeker’s Pay-Related Benefit. Class S, which a sole trader pays, covers none of those four.
  • USC applies on top: 0.5 percent on the first 12,012 euros, 2 percent on the next 16,688 euros, 3 percent on the next 41,344 euros and 8 percent on the balance.

Worth keeping the two jurisdictions apart, because the sector news travels. From 6 April 2026, the United Kingdom makes recruitment agencies jointly and severally liable with the umbrella for PAYE and National Insurance. Where no agency sits in the chain, the end client picks that up. It is a UK measure under Finance Bill 2025-26. Ireland has enacted nothing equivalent, and Revenue’s employer obligations are unchanged.

Top Umbrella Companies in Ireland for 2026

Here is the shortlist. I looked for published fees, real credentials, included insurance cover rather than extra, and evidence of contractor specialization. Choosing the best umbrella companies Ireland has on offer is less about crowning a winner. It is about matching a provider to your contract length and your appetite for admin.

Two practical notes. Only three of the 11 publish their rates openly, so expect to ask for a quote in most cases. And an umbrella company for contractors in Ireland runs on flat monthly pricing almost everywhere, which matters more the higher your day rate goes.

Everything below runs in alphabetical order, deliberately, so that no ranking bias creeps in. Position on the page carries no judgment at all.

INSIGHT: How much do umbrella companies charge in Ireland?

Umbrella company fees and costs Ireland providers quote are nearly always a flat monthly figure, not a percentage of earnings. The price doesn’t change when your day rate does.

  • PAYE umbrella sits between 95 and 110 euro a month across the providers here: Fenero 95, Intax 100, Icon Accounting 110.
  • Umbrella Director runs higher, from 120 euro at Intax to 130 at Fenero and 155 at Icon Accounting.
  • The umbrella company setup cost Ireland 2026 contractors should expect is nothing at all. Free setup is standard, and reputable firms charge no exit fee either.
  • Only three 11 publish rates. The rest quote privately, so get the figure in writing along with confirmation that insurance is included.

INSIGHT: Umbrella company or personal limited company in Ireland, which keeps more of your pay?

The umbrella company vs limited company Ireland decision turns on contract length and earnings. An umbrella wins on simplicity; a limited company wins on retained profit once the rate is high enough.

  • Umbrella: no admin, running within about a day, and Class A PRSI with the four benefits Class S does not carry.
  • Personal limited company: retained trading profit meets corporation tax at 12.5 percent instead of marginal income tax, which is where the advantage comes from.
  • The cost is real, though. A company means CRO annual returns, directors’ duties and an accountant, and the umbrella fee disappears from your expenses.
  • For a first contract, a short assignment or a visa-restricted role, I would take the umbrella every time and revisit after a year.

FAQs on Umbrella Companies in Ireland

What is an umbrella company, and how does it work in Ireland?

An umbrella company employs you while you work contract assignments. You submit timesheets, and it invoices your agency or end client. The money then goes through payroll, with income tax, PRSI and USC deducted before you are paid. Every payment is reported to Revenue in real time. You get an employment contract, a payslip and employee status without registering a company of your own.

Who gains from this arrangement, the contractor or the client?

Contractors get their admin handled, accurate deductions, fast payment and insurance cover without company formation, which is the whole case for an Ireland umbrella company. Agencies and end clients get a compliant route to flexible workers without taking on employer duties themselves. The trade is a monthly fee against the time and risk you would otherwise carry, and for most short assignments that trade is worth making.

What services do these providers typically include?

Payroll processing, tax deductions, invoicing, expense handling and insurance cover form the core of what any umbrella company Ireland contractors use will do. Most add a portal, a named account manager and some tax advice. Several go further into pensions, mortgage introductions and limited company formation for when you outgrow the umbrella. Check whether insurance is genuinely bundled, because a few providers bill it separately.

How much do umbrella companies charge in Ireland in 2026?

Published flat fees run from 95 to 155 euro a month across the providers reviewed here, with PAYE plans cheaper than Director plans. Fenero starts at 95, Intax at 100 and Icon Accounting at 110 for PAYE, while Director plans reach 155. Everyone else quotes privately. Percentage-based pricing has largely disappeared from the reputable end of this market.

Which credentials actually matter when picking a provider?

Fee transparency, current Revenue tax clearance, insurance limits, payment speed and whether anyone answers the phone. Professional credentials help: Irish Payroll Association membership, CIPP approval and NSAI certification all signal a firm that is audited by someone. I would also ask how long the provider holds your money between receiving it and paying you.

How do providers stay compliant with Irish tax and employment law?

They register as employers with Revenue, operate real-time PAYE reporting on every payment, deduct the correct income tax, PRSI and USC, and file on time. Reputable firms maintain current tax clearance and hold professional certifications. One thing to keep straight: the umbrella reforms taking effect in Britain in April 2026 are UK law and change nothing about Irish obligations.

Are umbrella company fees tax-deductible?

For contractors on an Umbrella Director arrangement, the management fee is generally a deductible business expense. That is why providers such as Fenero and Icon Accounting quote both a headline and an after-tax figure. Treatment differs for straight PAYE umbrella arrangements, so confirm it with your account manager rather than assuming the deduction applies.

Flat fee or percentage: which fee structure should I look for?

Flat monthly fees, in nearly every case. A percentage model quietly costs you more as your rate rises. A fixed fee stays put whether you bill 400 euros a day or 900. Every provider here that publishes pricing uses a flat fee, and I would treat a percentage quote as a reason to ask harder questions.
