An umbrella company in France isn’t a legal category. The closest thing is portage salarial, a regulated three-way arrangement set out in the Code du travail. A portage salarial company employs you, invoices your client, and pays you a salary. You keep health cover, retirement contributions and unemployment rights.

The model is not a copy of the British one. Under French rules, you find your own clients and agree your own price. The provider has no duty to give you work. That is the sharpest difference from umbrella companies in the UK, where an agency usually supplies the assignment.

Two groups use umbrella companies in France. The first is independent professionals: consultants, trainers, IT and engineering experts, interim managers. The second is businesses, French or foreign, that need outside expertise for a defined job without hiring anyone directly.

Which provider you pick decides how much of your invoice reaches you. Fees, caps, extra charges, the financial guarantee, and the quality of your adviser all vary. I reviewed 10 portage companies on their own websites in September 2026. I checked published fees, guarantees, labels, and services, and I left out anything a provider does not state itself.

How Do Umbrella Companies Work in France?

Search for umbrella corporation France, and you will still land on portage salarial firms, because nothing else fits the description. Three contracts hold the arrangement together. You sign an employment contract with the provider, either a CDD or a CDI. The provider signs a commercial contract with your client, and a portage agreement sets out how the relationship runs.

The money follows a single path. Your client pays the provider, which deducts its management fee and then the social contributions. What is left reaches you as salary, with professional expenses reimbursed on top. You report your activity monthly, and the provider keeps an activity account in your name.

The rules are strict about who qualifies. You need expertise and autonomy. You also need a level 5 qualification, meaning 2 years of higher education, or 3 years of experience in the same sector. A mission with 1 client is capped at 36 months, and a CDD runs to 18 months including 2 renewals.

Some work is off limits. A client may use portage only for occasional tasks outside its normal activity, or for a one-off job needing expertise it lacks. Personal services such as childcare and housework are excluded, and you cannot replace an employee on strike.

Portage is also not an employer of record. It assumes you found the client and set the price yourself. A company wanting a permanent French employee under its own direction needs an employer of record in France or its own French entity.

INSIGHT: Is portage salarial the same as a UK umbrella company?

They solve the same problem, but French portage is a legal status with its own rules, not a payroll arrangement.

  • Portage salarial is defined in the Code du travail at articles L1254-1 and following, and has had its own branch collective agreement since 2017.
  • You must have the expertise and autonomy to find clients and set prices yourself. The provider has no obligation to supply you with work.
  • A level 5 qualification, meaning 2 years of higher education, or 3 years of experience in the same sector, is the entry condition.
  • A mission with 1 client is capped at 36 months, and the client may use portage only for occasional or expertise-based work.

Top Umbrella Companies in France for 2026

I ran the same checklist across all 10 firms. The published fee and any monthly cap came first, then extra charges beyond the fee, which is where the surprises hide. After that came the financial guarantee, the labels held, and whether salary is advanced when a client pays late. I haven’t scored the top-rated umbrella companies in France because no independent rating covers this sector.

These are the recommended umbrella companies in France that publish enough to be judged fairly. I read every fact below on the provider’s own site in September 2026, and where a fee is not published, the block says so.

All companies below are listed in alphabetical order, so their position on the page does not indicate ranking.

How Much Do Umbrella Companies Cost in France in 2026?

French providers charge a percentage of your revenue excluding VAT. Some cap the monthly amount, and a few add flat charges. The percentage is only part of what leaves your invoice, because social contributions come out of the same revenue first.

A percentage behaves differently from the flat weekly fee used in some other markets. Our guide to umbrella company rates lays out that comparison. On a modest daily rate, a percentage is kind. At a high rate, it is punishing unless a cap stops it.

That is why the cap matters more than the headline number. Embarq charges 6% but stops at EUR 600 a month. Régie Portage charges 5%, stops at EUR 650, then adds 1%. CEGELEM charges 4% with no cap and no extras stated.

A typical umbrella company France quote covers the contracts, invoicing, collection, payroll, and social filings. Insurance and adviser time usually sit inside the same percentage. Ask what falls outside it.

5 of these 10 firms publish a rate. The other 5 quote on request, and I have not estimated a number for any of them. No single provider is the leading umbrella company France offers on price, because the cap and the extras decide the outcome at your revenue level.

INSIGHT: What does portage salarial actually cost in France?

Compare the fee, the cap, and any extra charges together, because the headline percentage alone doesn’t show the real cost.

  • Published management fees across this list run from 4% to 7% of revenue, and 2 providers cap the monthly amount at EUR 600 and EUR 650.
  • Some providers add separate charges. Régie Portage sets taxes and insurance at 1% of revenue, and prices an alternative offer at EUR 35 per day worked.
  • Amendment no. 13 of the collective agreement lets a provider deduct charges beyond fees and contributions. Ask in writing whether the firm applies it.
  • A cap changes the effective rate. Embarq’s own worked example puts 6% at an effective 4% once monthly revenue reaches EUR 15,000.

How to Choose an Umbrella Company in France

The best umbrella company in France is simply the one whose guarantee, fee, and service model fit your situation. Work through these 5 checks in order, and ask for every answer in writing.

Start with the financial guarantee. Every portage firm must hold one by law, but the size and the guarantor differ. ITG publishes EUR 9 million held at the Caisse des Dépôts. Others say only that a guarantee exists.

Then push on fee transparency. Get the percentage, the cap, any flat charges, and the cost of a salary advance in a single written answer. Ask for a payslip simulation at your real daily rate. The gap between a quoted rate and a simulated payslip is where hidden charges show up.

Labels are a shortcut, not a verdict. AFNOR issues the PEPS label after an audit, and FEDEPS issues the Zero Hidden Fees label after an external financial audit. ISO 9001 and EcoVadis speak to process, not to your pay.

The service model decides your daily experience. Check the payment date, whether salary is advanced when a client is late, and how many advisers you get. If you work across borders, confirm international portage is genuinely offered.

Finally, check the fit with your activity. Confirm you meet the qualification or experience requirement, and check the sector focus. Decide between a CDD and a CDI before signing, because they carry different limits.

INSIGHT: What minimum salary and contract limits apply in portage salarial?

Portage only works if your billing covers a legal minimum salary and your missions stay within the time limits.

  • Without an applicable branch agreement, minimum monthly pay is 75% of the social security ceiling for full-time activity. That is EUR 3,003.75 in 2026.
  • The 2026 monthly ceiling, the PMSS, is EUR 4,005, and the annual ceiling, the PASS, is EUR 48,060.
  • A CDD in Portage runs to 18 months, including 2 renewals, extendable by up to 3 months to look for new clients. A mission with 1 client is capped at 36 months.
  • A business contribution allowance applies on top, set by branch agreement or defaulting to 5% of the pay due.

One last thing if your work crosses a border. A mission in Geneva or Basel does not run on French rules, and a Swiss umbrella company operates under a different framework than French portage. Contribution rates, permits, and minimum pay all change. Check which country’s law governs the assignment before you sign anything.

FAQs on Umbrella Companies in France

What is an umbrella company, and how does it work in France?

France uses portage salarial instead. The provider employs you on a CDD or a CDI, signs a commercial contract with your client, and invoices that client for your work. It then deducts its management fee and the social contributions, and pays the balance to you as salary with a monthly payslip.

What is portage salarial, and how is it different from a traditional umbrella company?

Portage salarial is a legal status set out in the Code du travail, with eligibility conditions and time limits. You find your own clients and set your own price, and the provider has no duty to give you work. A British umbrella is a payroll arrangement, usually sitting behind an agency that supplied the assignment.

Who can use an umbrella company in France?

Autonomous professionals who hold a level 5 qualification, meaning 2 years of higher education, or at least 3 years of experience in the same sector. The work must be an occasional or expertise-based assignment for a business client. Personal services are excluded, and several regulated professions cannot use the status.

How much do umbrella companies charge in France?

Providers usually quote between 5% and 10% of revenue excluding VAT. Published offers across the 10 firms reviewed here run from 4% to 7%, and 2 of them cap the monthly amount. Ask about separate charges for taxes, insurance and salary advances before you compare any 2 quotes.

What services are normally included in French umbrella company fees?

Contracts with you and with the client, invoicing and collection, payroll, social contribution filings and an activity account in your name. Professional liability insurance and adviser support are usually included. Many firms add a salary advance, savings plans, meal vouchers and training on top of the basics.

How do umbrella companies in France handle payroll and social contributions?

As your employer, the provider registers you, calculates employer and employee contributions, and pays them to the social security bodies. It withholds income tax at source under the French system and issues a monthly payslip. It must also report monthly on client payments received and fees deducted.

What should contractors check before choosing an umbrella company in France?

Check the financial guarantee and who holds it, the full fee breakdown (including caps and flat charges), and the cost of any salary advance. Check the payment date, the labels the firm holds, and how many advisers you get. Ask for a payslip simulation at your real daily rate.

Are umbrella companies in France regulated by French employment law?

Yes. The framework is in the Code du travail, in articles L1254-1 and following. It rests on a 2015 ordinance and a branch collective agreement in force since 2017. Portage must be the provider’s exclusive activity. It must also declare itself to the authorities and hold a financial guarantee.

What is the difference between portage salarial and working as a micro-entrepreneur?

Portage gives you employee status, a payslip, and unemployment rights, with the admin handled for you and higher deductions as a result. The micro regime leaves you self-employed, managing your own filings, with lighter charges and revenue ceilings. Check the current ceilings on an official source before deciding.

Can foreign businesses use an umbrella company to engage professionals in France?

Yes, as the provider’s client, for occasional or expertise-based assignments within the 36-month cap. The foreign business doesn’t need a French entity for that. For a permanent role under its own direction, an employer of record or a French entity is the better route.
